Lance Oppenheim was just 17 years old when he made this touching tribute to his grandfather, Walter, documenting his decline and passing as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is now the 6th leading cause of death in America, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, and touches the lives of millions of Americans in one way or another.

This short film was inspired when the family found a trove of forgotten 8mm film that hadn’t been viewed in decades. Oppenheim says, “Motivated by my grandfather’s unfulfilled dreams of film making, I decided to piece together a movie based upon the 8mm film my grandfather had already made during his younger days.” The film combines that found footage of his grandfather’s younger days with glimpses of the old man as he tries to recall those memories and come to terms with his present.
